The Shaker Museum|Mount Lebanon opened its main season exhibition, Side By Side: Shaker and Modern Design, to the public on Sunday, June 28. The exhibition, which pairs Shaker works with works by contemporary and modern designers, will be on view during the museum’s hours, 10AM-4PM every Friday-Monday through October 12.

Shaker furniture has been has been widely influential to modern furniture designers. This exhibition examines the idea of modernism and its connection to ideals of utopian social reform through the lens of Shaker and modern furnishings, with works by iconic designers such as Jens Risom, Børge Mogensen, George Nakashima, and Wharton Esherick shown alongside Shaker works from the nineteenth century.

Each year,  the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show welcomes a flock of eager collectors, leading art and design professionals, and top international dealers to the Palm Beach County Convention Center. A hallmark of the Palm Beach social season, the elegant show presents premier offerings ranging in style from classical to contemporary and thoughtful programming that fosters the understanding and appreciation of art and antiques.

One of the most highly-anticipated elements of the 2015 Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show is the Designer Showcase, which features six captivating vignettes created by the world’s most influential interior designers, including Campion Platt, Suzanne Kasler, Gil Walsh, William and Phyllis Taylor of Taylor & Taylor, Lars Bolander, and Jennifer Garrigues. The designers have been asked to create spaces using fine art, furniture, and decorative accessories from exhibitors in the show.

The Corning Museum of Glass has made five acquisitions of recent works by artists Roni Horn, Klaus Moje, Ayala Serfaty, Jeroen Verhoeven and Fred Wilson, expanding its collection contemporary art and design. The museum is due to put the works on display in its new $64 million wing, which is due to open March 20.

The museum in Corning, New York, is the world’s largest collection of glass objects, spanning 3,500 years.

Paris Art + Design (PAD), a pioneering event for art and design enthusiasts and collectors, has announced the galleries that will be participating in its 2015 edition. The Fair, which is held in Paris’ magnificent Jardin des Tuileries, will run from Thursday, March 26, 2015, through Sunday, March 29, 2015.

In less than twenty years, PAD has emerged as one of the finest fairs of its kind thanks to its selection of top-notch design objects and works of art. The eighteenth iteration of PAD will reinforce its dedication to eclecticism, creating unprecedented dialogue between modern art, historical and contemporary design, and jewelry. The intimately scaled show will feature close to seventy-five galleries from France and beyond, and expects to welcome approximately 40,000 art and design enthusiasts, professionals, and collectors -- both amateur and seasoned.

On Thursday, January 22, 2015, Metro Curates will open to the public at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. Formerly known as the Metro Show, this year’s fair will feature a wide range of offerings, including ethnographic objects, applied and decorative arts, historic and contemporary textiles, and modern and contemporary fine art and design. According to Caroline Lerch, the show’s Director, “We believe that the new name best reflects the curatorial aims of the fair.” 

Organized by The Art Fair Company, the producers of a long line of prestigious shows, including SOFA CHICAGO and the AADLA Spring Show NYC, Metro Curates presents works in a remarkably unique and thoughtful manner. Exhibitors are asked to feature a single artist or themed exhibit in their booths, creating a swath of interestingly juxtapositioned displays that span a variety of movements, genres, and oeuvres. In addition to the specially curated booths, the intimate scale of the show allows visitors to spend time with each exhibitor and fully absorb and appreciate the compellingly diverse selection of materials.

On Wednesday, January 7, 2015, Christie’s announced that Ambra Medda will be the new Global Creative Director of the auction house’s 20/21 Design Department. Based in London, the department is dedicated to furniture, lighting, ceramics, and sculpture from the Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Modernist, and Contemporary movements. The auction house holds 20/21 Design sales twice annually in New York (June and December), Paris (May and November), and London (April and October).

Medda, an accomplished curator, co-founded Design Miami alongside developer Craig Robbins in 2005 and served as the fair’s director for five years. With annual shows in Basel, Switzerland, and Miami, Design Miami has emerged as one of the world’s leading celebrations of design culture and commerce.

In 2008, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (formerly the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum) embarked on a sweeping renovation of its home -- New York City’s landmark Andrew Carnegie Mansion. Founded in 1896, the museum has been housed in the massive Georgian structure, brimming with wood-paneled walls, stained glass, and carved ceilings, since 1976. Dedicated to historic and contemporary design, the institution hoped to create a space that better communicated its devotion to design evolution.

On December 12, following a three-year closure, the Cooper Hewitt will unveil its renovated and redesigned home to the public. The project, which cost approximately $91 million to complete, added sixty-percent more exhibition space, allowing the institution to present more of its monumental collection and temporary exhibitions. The revamped space also includes a new shop, casework, and movable displays designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, a new public staircase, a new freight elevator, and a redesigned outdoor garden by Hood Design.

New York’s Collective Design, an innovative fair that presents a curated selection of 20th-century and contemporary design, has released a handful of details about its 2015 edition. The upcoming fair will take place at a new location, Skylight Clarkson Square, from May 13 through May 17. Located in Manhattan’s design-forward SoHo neighborhood, Skylight boasts 60,000-square-feet of raw event space. The 2014 edition of Collective Design was held at Moynihan Station in Midtown.

Fair organizers have also announced a portion of the exhibitor line-up, which features a global roster of emerging and established galleries.

On Saturday, September 13, the twelfth annual London Design Festival opened to the public. The nine-day celebration of contemporary design promotes London’s creativity, drawing in the city's greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers, and educators. The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) serves as the central hub location for the event, which spans the entire city, including various cultural institutions, galleries, luxury boutiques, art schools, public spaces, and more.

Conceived by designers Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans in 2003, the London Design Festival is comprised of over 300 events and exhibitions staged by hundreds of partner organizations across the design spectrum and from around the world.

On September 11, 2014, the 27th annual Biennale des Antiquaires will open to the public. The prestigious show, which is held at the Grand Palais in Paris, is celebrated for its elegant atmosphere, blue chip offerings, and elite guest list. A VIP preview was held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, offering select patrons a sneak peek of the show’s treasure-trove of rare antiques, fine art, jewelry, silver, porcelain, and contemporary design.

This year’s Versailles-themed Biennale was designed by the celebrated French interior decorator Jacques Grange. A chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur, Grange recreated the royal gardens of Versailles under the Grand Palais’ iconic glass dome.
