New York's Whitney Museum of American Art may have opened the doors to its new Meatpacking home in May, but that doesn't mean the Renzo Piano-designed building has revealed all of its secrets just yet. In February, the museum will launch a new program called "Open Plan" on its fifth-floor galleries, taking advantage of the largest column-free gallery space of any of the city's museums.

The Museum of Modern Art is planning its biggest masterpiece yet, not that you’ll get it.

The museum is moving ahead with plans for an estimated $93 million expansion at the former home of the American Folk Art Museum, according to an application filed with the New York City Department of Buildings Tuesday.

The plans for an adjacent lot, at 45 West 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, call for 32,842 square feet of new space, which will include theaters, a library/lounge, classrooms, exhibit space and gardens, the application indicates.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art announced Wednesday that it will reopen May 14, 2016, after being closed for three years of expansion. When it does, it will have seven floors of exhibition space, and one of those floors, the fourth, is larger than all five floors from the original building designed by Mario Bottathat opened 20 years ago.

“This is a game changer for San Francisco,” said SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra. “It lifts us to the top ranks for museums of modern and contemporary art in the world.”

The Vancouver Art Gallery on Tuesday unveiled Herzog & de Meuron’s conceptual design for its new museum building in downtown Vancouver. The 310,000-square-foot building features more than 85,000 square feet of exhibition space—more than double the museum’s current size — and a new education center with a 350-seat auditorium, workshops and a resource center for research, library services and artist archives.

The Tate Modern in London has announced that its hotly anticipated £260 million ($401 million) extension, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, will open to the public on June 17, 2016.

The extension and renovation will increase the Tate's display space by a whopping 60 percent, allowing a much greater portion of the museum's collection of modern and contemporary art to be shown. To mark the occasion, the new Tate Modern will reopen with a complete re-hang, showing works by over 250 artists from 50 countries.

Starting this week, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will be something it hasn't been in recent memory: overwhelming.

When the museum unveils the final stage of its multi-year renovation this week, it will be the first time in 50 years that every gallery in the museum is in use, and its exhibit space will be larger than it's ever been.

"When entering Morgan Great Hall, people will gasp, or that's what we're hoping," said museum Director Susan Talbott. "This is the most number of paintings I believe we've had [on exhibit simultaneously], ever."

At nearly all museums, the treasures on public display are but a small fraction of the riches within. Gallery space being limited, priceless paintings and rare sculptures are consigned to basements or off-site storage much of the time.

But the soon-to-open Broad museum next to Walt Disney Concert Hall will offer visitors a peek behind the institutional curtain, a concept that is central to the new building's design. Past the elevator, over a stainless steel railing and through a steep stairwell, a patch of glass offers a peek into the museum's storage area, "the vault."

For much of his life, the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) lived and worked out of a cramped and cluttered atelier in the 14th Arrondissement of Paris where paint-stained surfaces were covered with busts and figurines and walls were sketched and scrawled over. The artist toiled day and night in this spartan setting, pausing for meals with plaster still stuck in his hair.

That 270-square-foot studio will be recreated exactly as he left it as part of the new Institut Giacometti, a research center and exhibition space that will open to the public late next year in the same arrondissement, or district, according to Catherine Grenier, the director of the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti.

The Whitney Museum of American Art is nearly ready to open the doors to its brand spanking new Renzo Piano-designed building in the Meatpacking district. Out with the old, and in with the new. And that means it’s going to be rehanging its world-renowned permanent collection in 50,000-square-feet of indoor galleries, and 13,000-square-feet of outdoor exhibition space, for the inaugural exhibition “America Is Hard to See.”

Today, the museum announced the full list of artists for the show. It’s going to feature an impressive 650 artworks by a whopping 407 artists, with works dating from 1900 to the present. And that cryptic title? It’s taken from a pointy Robert Frost poem about the deception of Columbus’ discovery of America.

Fondazione Prada will open a new permanent exhibition space in Milan on May 9 with a range of planned artistic activities, some of which have been selected to create a bridge with its existing Venetian venue.

Robert Gober and Thomas Demand will create site-specific installations in response to the new building’s architecture, while director Roman Polanski will delve on his cinematographic inspirations with a new documentary and a screening of some of his films. A selection of artworks from the Prada Collection will also be curated around different themes.
