When the Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles officially opens on Sept. 20, visitors will be treated to a selection of more than 250 works of contemporary art culled from the private collection of founders Eli and Edythe Broad, museum officials will announce on Friday.

Though many of the pieces have been seen in public before, this will be the most in-depth display of art from the 2,000-piece collection, spotlighting more than 60 artists.

At nearly all museums, the treasures on public display are but a small fraction of the riches within. Gallery space being limited, priceless paintings and rare sculptures are consigned to basements or off-site storage much of the time.

But the soon-to-open Broad museum next to Walt Disney Concert Hall will offer visitors a peek behind the institutional curtain, a concept that is central to the new building's design. Past the elevator, over a stainless steel railing and through a steep stairwell, a patch of glass offers a peek into the museum's storage area, "the vault."

Eli and Edythe Broad have been regular visitors to Art Basel along with the founding director of the Broad, Joanne Heyler. But this year the collectors are giving the fair a miss: opening the Broad on September 20, a $140m, 120,000 sq. ft museum on Los Angeles’s Grand Avenue, has had to take priority.

Heyler is busy overseeing the installation of the inaugural hang in the Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed space, which will feature works from the Broad’s own collection and that of the Broad Art Foundation, which they established in 1984.

The Broad museum will open Sept. 20 as the downtown showcase for Eli and Edythe Broad's contemporary art collection, the founding couple announced Thursday. As promised, admission will be free. But it'll cost $10 to get a one-day sneak preview Feb. 15.

The opening art display in September will offer an array of greatest hits from the more than 2,000 pieces the Broads have amassed. The show will range through some 60 years of post-World War II art, arranged in "predominantly chronological" order from the 1950s to a recently acquired massive video installation created in 2012.

When downtown L.A.’s Broad museum finally opens this fall, it will have not only an inaugural exhibition featuring Eli and Edythe Broad’s contemporary art collection but also newly acquired works that will be rolled out later in the museum's debut year, said Joanne Heyler, Broad Foundation director and chief curator.

One such piece is Jordan Wolfson’s life-sized, animatronic sculpture “(Female Figure) 2014.” The work generated much buzz when it premiered this year at David Zwirner gallery in Manhattan as part of the artist’s first solo show.

Eli Broad's new contemporary art museum that is currently rising in downtown Los Angeles will now open some time in fall 2015, organizers said on Tuesday.

The museum has experienced delays since construction began in 2012, and an expected 2014 opening was scratched earlier this year.

Broad officials didn't provide specific dates in their announcement. The museum, designed by the firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, is expected to cost about $140 million and will feature artwork from the private collection of Eli and Edythe Broad.

The Broad Museum Delays Opening Until 2015

The opening date for the Broad, the contemporary art museum that will showcase Eli and Edythe Broad’s comprehensive collection, has been pushed back to 2015. The $140 million museum, which is being designed by the New York City-based studio, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, was initially slated to open at the end of this year but construction delays slowed progress.

The delay has given the museum, which will be located in downtown Los Angeles, time to develop plans for a restaurant and landscaped plaza. Diller Scofidio + Renfro have already finalized plans for the outdoor space while architects for the restaurant, which will be located next to the museum, have not yet been selected.

In 1984, lifelong philanthropists, Eli and Edythe Broad, founded the Broad Art Foundation, a lending library of contemporary artworks that have been loaned over 8,000 times to nearly 500 museums and galleries across the globe. The Broad, which will offer free admission, will serve as the headquarters for the Broad Art Foundation.

Museum officials plan to announce the Broad’s new opening date later this year.
