The 2014 New Orleans Antiques Forum, “Southern Expression,” will explore the many facets of regional style with acclaimed experts in the field of decorative arts. This year’s topics include furniture, pottery, mourning jewelry and art, southern landscape paintings, clocks, quilts, and more.

The Historic New Orleans Collection established the New Orleans Antiques Forum (NOAF) in 2008 in an effort to boost cultural tourism in New Orleans and south Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. Centered on a series of educational and entertaining talks, the three-day forum encourages the appreciation of decorative arts created in and imported through the Gulf Coast. Sessions are accessible to experienced collectors as well as beginning antiques enthusiasts.

Looking to visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum without actually going to the Smithsonian? You might soon be able to do so from the comfort of your own smartphone.

On Friday, the White House announced in a blog post that the Smithsonian American Art Museum would soon open up its digitized collection to developers so they can build it into educational apps. According to the White House, “even museum curators do not have easily accessible information about their art collections. This information will soon be available to everyone.”

The Vancouver Art Gallery announced that it has selected the Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron to design its new building in downtown Vancouver. The 300,000-square-foot facility will provide more than double the space of the museum’s current home. It will be Herzog & de Meuron’s first project in Canada.

Based in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron’s previous projects include the Tate Modern in London, the Perez Art Museum in Miami, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The firm was selected from a group of five finalists, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro (New York), KPMB Architects (Toronto), SANAA (Tokyo), and Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects (New York).

The Vancouver Art Gallery’s new building will include dedicated spaces for the museum’s growing collections, expanded indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces, and new educational facilities. The museum plans to release conceptual designs for the new building in early 2015.

The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AK has acquired Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman Wilson House in Millstone, NJ from architect/designer team Lawrence and Sharon Tarantino. Built along the Millstone River, the house has suffered significant flood damage and relocation has been recommended in order to preserve the structure. The Tarantinos held a multi-year search to find a buyer that could provide an appropriate setting and context for the historic building. The house will be disassembled and relocated to Bentonville, where it will be re-assembled on Crystal Bridges’ 120-acre campus.

The Bachman Wilson house was commissioned in 1954 by Abraham Wilson and Gloria Bachman, whose brother, Marvin Bachman, was an apprentice in the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin Fellowship. The structure reflects Wright’s Usonian period, which was defined by simplicity and practicality. Crystal Bridges plans to incorporate the house into its educational and public program offerings. In addition, thanks to an ongoing partnership with the University of Arkansas, the museum anticipates making Wright’s house available to the University’s Fay Jones School of Architecture.

Site preparation at Crystal Bridges for the Bachman Wilson House will begin this spring. The museum plans to have the project completed in early 2015.

Dürer, Rembrandt & Whistler: Prints from the Collection of Dr. Dorrance T. Kelly is now on view at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT. The exhibition is comprised of one of the finest local collections of Old Master prints, which was assembled by Dr. Dorrance T. Kelly. Kelly, who had primarily collected American 20^th century prints and prints by John James Audubon (1785-1851) in the past, began collecting Old Master works in recent years.

Kelly’s collection includes rare etching, woodcuts and engravings by German printmaker Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528); nearly 30 works by Rembrandt (1606-1669); sheets by Canaletto (1697-1768); and several sheets by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). The collection is rounded out by a group of etched cityscapes and figure studies by James McNeil Whistler (1834-1903).

 Dürer, Rembrandt & Whistler: Prints from the Collection of Dr. Dorrance T. Kelly will be on view at the Bruce Museum through August 18, 2013. A scholarly catalogue and educational programs complement it.
