A drawing of hell previously attributed to a workshop assistant of Hieronymus Bosch has now been recognized as an authentic work by the master himself according to the experts conducting the Bosch Research and Conservation Project (BRCP) examining the artist's works worldwide.

The drawing has been hidden away in a private collection and will go on public display for the very first time as part of the major exhibition of works by Hieronymus Bosch at the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch opening on February 13, 2016. Art historian and co-ordinator of the BRCP, Matthijs Ilsink, calls the drawing "an extraordinary find."

Old Sturbridge Village has a remarkable collection of early American objects - the furniture, tools, clothing, toys, decorative arts and other artifacts of life in rural, inland New England during the period 1790 to 1840.

Old Sturbridge Village regularly hosts Collectors' Forums in order to focus on this collection, bringing together curators, experts, collectors and the public to examine a large sampling from the collection and learn about new scholarship and perspectives on the collection. This annual event is being held in conjunction with the opening of our new exhibit, Kindred Spirits: A.B. Wells, Malcolm Watkins and the Origins of Old Sturbridge Village.

The Cleveland Museum of Art announced it is returning its sculpture of a Hindu god to Cambodia.

The sculpture of Hanuman has belonged to the museum since 1982. But in 2013, museum officials learned the statue was likely part of a temple complex called Prasat Chen.

The Cleveland Museum of Art sent experts to Cambodia and recently found evidence the 10th-century sculpture was at the temple’s gate.

Two Francis Bacon self-portraits are going on public display for the first time after resurfacing in a private collection.

Descendants of the original collector have decided to sell the paintings, which are expected to fetch £15m each at auction.

Experts knew of the works’ existence, but had no idea who had bought them soon after they were completed about 40 years ago.

The paintings will go on show at Sotheby’s in London and New York before going under the hammer in July.

A self-portrait by Van Dyck that was dismissed a decade ago as a copy is now hanging in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota, as an original work. The painting, which has been authenticated by experts, was quietly put on display in February, having been lent by a US collector based on the West Coast.

An unpublished paper on the self-portrait, prepared for the owner, dates the work to around 1629 and states that the attribution is accepted by four key experts: Susan Barnes, a co-author of the 2004 Van Dyck catalogue raisonné, Christopher Brown, the former director of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, David Jaffé, a former senior curator at the National Gallery in London, and Malcolm Rogers, the outgoing director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

After a hiatus of almost ten years, the Edvard Munch Award is being reinstated in partnership with Norway’s oil and gas multinational Statoil.

The first edition of the biennial Edvard Munch Art Award, which comes with a NOK 500,000 ($66,000) prize and an exhibition at Oslo’s prestigious Munch Museum, will take place on the artist’s birthday, on 12 December.

Stein Olav Henrichsen, the director of the Munch Museum, has said he wants a jury composed of international experts “with knowledge on the art scene in China, India and other Eastern countries. It is very important not to focus too much on Europe and the US when looking for candidates.”

The Spanish newspaper "El Confidential" has reported that the Museo del Prado has purchased a Renaissance triptych, depicting the birth and adoration of Jesus, for €4 million.

The artist behind the piece remains unidentified, but experts have deduced it was painted in around 1450 in Castilla, Spain. It previously belonged to the Álvarez Fisa Collection.

A street in a small town in Italy bears the name of a British officer who risked court martial to save a Renaissance masterpiece from shelling in the Second World War.

Yet, Italian art experts have become so worried about the state of the 15th-century fresco dubbed “the greatest picture in the world”, that they have embarked on a major restoration project.

The work was only made possible with a hefty donation from a private citizen.

Piero della Francesca’s "The Resurrection," on display in Sansepolcro in north-east Tuscany, is widely hailed as one of the masterpieces of late 15th-century Italian art.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s marble sculpture "Adam" by Tullio Lombardo (ca. 1455–1532) will return to public view on November 11, following a tragic accident in 2002 and an unprecedented 12-year conservation project. It is the first life-sized nude marble statue since antiquity and the most important Italian Renaissance sculpture in North America. Tullio carved Adam in the early 1490s for the monumental tomb of doge Andrea Vendramin, now in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, and it is the only signed sculpture from that iconic monument. The sculpture and its restoration will be the focus of Tullio Lombardo’s "Adam: A Masterpiece Restored," the inaugural installation in the Museum’s new Venetian Sculpture Gallery.

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum, said: “We are proud to return this great Tullio sculpture to public view in a beautiful new gallery. Our extraordinary conservators collaborated with a team of experts over 12 years to pursue this extremely challenging work. The results of their care and innovation are stunning.”

A bitter dispute over a painting bought for £140 five decades ago reaches the High Court today – with some of the world’s most prominent Caravaggio experts lining up to take sides.

Sotheby’s is being sued over claims that it misattributed a work – The Cardsharps – to a follower of Caravaggio rather than the Italian painter himself, costing the seller millions of pounds.
