 On Monday, January 26, 2015 at 5PM, Jay Robert Stiefel, a lawyer and well-known collector and historian of American decorative arts, will give a lecture entitled “Leather Apron Men: Benjamin Franklin & Philadelphia’s Artisans” at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The event is free and open to the public.

The illustrated talk will center on Benjamin Franklin’s work as an artisan as well as his role in fostering the public appreciation of his fellow craftsmen. America’s foremost founding fathers and the country’s first printing magnate, Franklin tended toward self-deprecation, writing in a 1740 issue of his “Pennsylvania Gazette” that he was no more than “a poor ordinary mechanick of this City.”

One of the richest prizes in the arts, the $300,000 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, is being awarded to the artist Maya Lin.

Ms. Lin, who first caught the world’s attention in 1981 with her design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will collect the award at a private event at the Museum of Modern Art on Nov. 12.

The prize, now in its 21st year, was established by Lillian Gish’s will, and it is given annually to “a man or woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life.”

The prestigious Philadelphia Antiques Show announced that they have appointed Catherine Sweeney Singer as Director of the event. She will be the first person to fulfill the newly implemented position. As the Director, Singer will work with exhibitors, the Show Board, and the Advisory Committee to help all branches meet their short- and long-term goals. The Kentucky-based art and antiques show management company, Keeling Waingwright Associates, previously oversaw the Philadelphia Antiques Show.

Singer is well known in the art and antiques world and beyond as she has served as Executive Director of the seminal Winter Antiques Show in New York for the past 20 years. In addition, Singer is the Director of the American Art Fair and has consulted on the recent iteration of Asia Week in New York and The New York Botanical Garden’s annual garden antiques show. Prior to her event planning, marketing and exhibition development endeavors, Singer was the first Associate Publisher and Advertising Director of Art & Auction and for the re-launch of Art & Antiques.

The Philadelphia Antiques Show, which is in its 53^rd year, is one of the finest Americana shows in the world. It will be held from April 26, 2014 through April 29, 2014 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.  

Colby College in Waterville, Maine will unveil its 26,000-square foot Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at an opening event for friends of the institution followed by an open house on Sunday. One of the inaugural exhibitions, The Lunder Collection: A Gift of Art to Colby College, will present over 280 works gifted to the Colby College Museum of Art by major supporters, Peter and Paula Lunder. Mr. Lunder is a life overseer of the institution while Mrs. Lunder is a life trustee of the board.

The other exhibitions that will be on view include a selection of Chinese art from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Lunder-Colville Collection; a presentation of American folk art weathervanes; paintings from the Alex Katz Foundation; a survey of abstract works by John Marin; and an exhibition exploring the design of the new pavilion, which adds 10,000 square feet of gallery space to the museum.

The Lunder Collection: A Gift of Art to Colby College, which includes works by John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alexander Calder and Romare Bearden will be the highlight of the museum’s opening festivities.

100 years after the 1913 Armory Show changed the landscape of American art forever, the current incarnation of the event opened to the public today, March 7, 2013. Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a press conference to inaugurate the 2013 Armory Show, which features 214 exhibitors from across the globe. The event is expected to draw about 66,000 visitors and will generate approximately $54 million in the city during its four-day run.

This year’s Armory Show features a specially curated section titled ‘Armory Focus: USA’ and aims to celebrate the remarkable impact the 1913 Armory Show had on the country. The section is curated by Eric Shiner, the director of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA and features 17 established and emerging galleries that focus on contemporary art.

The Armory Show is held on Piers 92 and 94 in central Manhattan and is part of the highly anticipated Armory Arts Week, a suite of cultural events and exhibitions taking place across the city from March 7-10, 2013.
