Robert Irwin will create a huge new work for the galleries of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, next spring. The octogenarian artist will produce the site-specific immersive installation using his signature materials—scrim and natural light.

Responding to the Hirshhorn’s unconventional architecture—it is a cylindrical building—Irwin will stretch more than 100ft of scrim from floor to ceiling in a gallery space that measures around 4,000 sq ft.

Iran is starting to use its soft power, agreeing last month to lend works from the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art’s (TMoCA) collection of international and Iranian art for an exhibition in Berlin next year. The show, a symbol of Iran’s rapprochement with the West, could travel beyond Berlin, a spokeswoman for the Tehran museum tells us. The exhibition will include works by international and Iranian artists.

Other leading museums have expressed an interest in borrowing from the Tehran collection, which includes works by Picasso, Rothko, Pollock and Bacon among others.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has received a $2 million gift from trustee Joleen Julis and her husband, Mitch, museum officials announced. The donation is the largest gift from an individual ever made to the Smithsonian’s modern and contemporary art museum.

The donation will establish the “Future Fund,” a $4 million effort to re-design the museum’s lobby and sculpture garden, according to Hirshhorn Director Melissa Chiu.

“Le Onde: Waves of Italian Influence (1914–1971)” runs Aug. 22–Jan. 3, 2016, at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. This exhibition of nearly 20 works from the museum’s collection follows Italian contributions to the transnational evolution of abstraction, through movements and tendencies such as futurism, spatialism, op art and kinetic art.

The exhibition includes several works that have been exhibited only rarely or not at all since entering the collection. Among those that have not been on view since the Hirshhorn’s inaugural exhibition in 1974–1975 are works by Zero group founder Heinz Mack, French op artist Yvaral and Italian painter Carlo Battaglia and several works by Italian artist Enrico Castellani.

The Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has hired Lisa Gold as director of public engagement, a newly-created position.

Gold comes to the Washington, DC museum from her former post as the executive director of the Washington Project for the Arts (WPA), a non-profit organization that aids and advises local artists on topics like arts management, grantsmanship, career development, and legal rights.

Coinciding with the release of a quasi-confession from Bill Cosby, whose art collection is on view until early 2016 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African art, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden announced Tuesday the acquisition of new works by a dozen artists and artist groups from Iran, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the U.K., and the United States.

The board of trustees of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden announced today that five new trustees have been elected to the Museum’s board. The new trustees are Haryanto Adikoesoemo, Jill Bernstein, Stéphan Crétier, Trinh D. Doan, and Jill Cooper Udall. The Hirshhorn has added a total of eight new trustees sincce Melissa Chiu became director in September.

Based in Jakarta, Haryanto Adikoesoemo is president director of PT AKR Corporindo Tbk, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Public Listed Companies Association, and a member of the Honor Council of APINDO, and the Young Presidents’ Organization.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has appointed Stephane Aquin from the Montreal Museum of Fine Art as its new chief curator.

Museum director Melissa Chiu announced the appointment Tuesday. Aquin is the second major hire for Chiu, who became director in September. She previously hired Gianni Jetzer as Curator-at-Large.

Aquin will lead a staff of six curators responsible for planning the exhibitions at the Smithsonian museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Aquin succeeds Kerry Brougher, who  served as the museum’s interim director before leaving in May to become director of the new Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Museum in Los Angeles.

This city may not have a reputation as being on the cutting edge of the international arts scene, but Melissa Chiu may be about to remedy that in her new role as director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

In her first interview since assuming her post a month ago, Ms. Chiu outlined a plan to develop the Hirshhorn, whose reputation rests largely on its collection of American and European modern and contemporary art, into more of a showcase for experimental and international works.

The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., is kicking off its 40th anniversary celebration with the long-term installation “At the Hub of Things: New Views of the Collection.” Featuring works from the collection from the past 75 years, “At the Hub of Things” is organized thematically rather than by artist or movement, revealing a fresh perspective on the Hirshhorn’s holdings of modern and contemporary art. The exhibition creates a lively conversation between artworks from different countries and generations.

“At the Hub of Things” is the first exhibition to be held in the Hirshhorn’s newly renovated third-floor galleries. The $1 million overhaul, which is the first full renovation that the galleries have received since their inception, has restored the space to architect Gordon Bunshaft’s original vision.
