An upstate New York museum known for its collection of work by Rembrandt, van Gogh and Picasso says it has received its largest donation of modern artwork in years.

The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls announced Friday that 55 works by some of the world’s leading modern artists are a gift from Werner Feibes and the late James Schmitt.

A century after his birth, on Jan. 24, 1915, Robert Motherwell occupies a middle rung on the reputation ladder of Abstract Expressionists. The names Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and possibly others would now come sooner to many people’s minds on the topic.

But through the long arc and productive prime of his career, Motherwell was as important as anyone in shaping the transformative artistic mode of the mid-20th century.

Today the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York detailed its plans for the Met Breuer, the museum’s annex for modern and contemporary art, which is set to open in March 2016 at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s former, Marcel Breuer–designed headquarters. The high modernist building will be renovated prior to the beginning of the Met’s eight-year lease and will include a “book bar,” the museum announced.

“Le Onde: Waves of Italian Influence (1914–1971)” runs Aug. 22–Jan. 3, 2016, at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. This exhibition of nearly 20 works from the museum’s collection follows Italian contributions to the transnational evolution of abstraction, through movements and tendencies such as futurism, spatialism, op art and kinetic art.

The exhibition includes several works that have been exhibited only rarely or not at all since entering the collection. Among those that have not been on view since the Hirshhorn’s inaugural exhibition in 1974–1975 are works by Zero group founder Heinz Mack, French op artist Yvaral and Italian painter Carlo Battaglia and several works by Italian artist Enrico Castellani.

Bay Area artist Richard Diebenkorn kept sketchbooks for his entire career; they served as a sort of nomadic studio where he experimented with visuals that bridged figurative and abstract ideas. Recently the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University acquired 29 of Diebenkorn’s sketchbooks, and this September they’re going on view to the public for the first time in Richard Diebenkorn: The Sketchbooks Revealed.

“The books are filled with stunningly gestural sketches of bits and pieces of daily life, both mundane capturing of everyday things, and powerful vignettes of intimate family moments,” Alison Gass, the Cantor’s associate director for collections, exhibitions, and curatorial affairs, told Hyperallergic.

Two famous works of art by Andy Warhol have vanished while on loan from a modern art museum in Eastern Europe.

And the artworks, lost since March this year, have been called "irreplaceable" by the museum which loaned them out in the first place.

One of the artworks is the famed Campbell’s Soup Can and the other is one of his well-regarded Marilyn Monroe images.

Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art announced today that it has tapped Eric Crosby, the associate curator of visual arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, to be its new Richard Armstrong Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. He starts in the new role in October.

Crosby had been at the Walker since 2009, where his curatorial credits included Liz Deschenes’s first solo museum outing and a rehang of part of the Walker’s permanent collection that focused on its extensive Fluxus holdings.

If you thought you knew everything there was to know about Andy Warhol, the undisputed high priest of Pop art, the exhibition “Warhol Underground” at the Centre Pompidou-Metz  might just change your mind.

“I never wanted to be a painter; I wanted to be a tap dancer” and “I don't paint any more, I gave it up about a year ago and just do movies now” are just two of the many statements made by Warhol in the 1960s that signified his ambitions beyond the pictorial field.

He is one of the great draftsmen of the impressionist era, acclaimed for strongly structured compositions and a masterful use of line. But when Edgar Degas discovered the printmaking technique known as monotype, everything changed.

As a major exhibition due to open at the Museum of Modern Art next spring reveals, he became much looser and more improvisational in his working methods. He regularly mixed printmaking with other media, like pastel. And he expanded past the subjects for which he is best known—dancers and scenes of modern life—to include risqué brothel scenes and landscapes verging on abstraction.

Tate Modern will next year present shows devoted to two giants of 20th-century art, the American artists Georgia O’Keeffe and Robert Rauschenberg.

Announcing its 2016 program, Tate also revealed that the works of Francis Bacon will be on display at its outpost in Liverpool, Paul Nash at Tate Britain, and a solo show by the young British artist Jessica Warboys at St Ives.
