A new scandal has rocked the art world, the likes of which have not been seen since the "early Vermeer" scandal of the 1940s. Sotheby’s was recently forced to take back an £8.4 million ‘Frans Hals,’ because it was revealed to be a fake. The paintings in question are Old Masters, said to be by Frans Hals, Lucas Cranach, and others. Few major art figures are willing to speak openly because the scandal is a matter of such embarrassment, but one well-known dealer has described the individual behind the forgeries as the “Moriarty of fakers” because they are so brilliantly constructed.

Old Master works by artists including Durer, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens and François Boucher will be coming to New York in 2017, some for the first time, in an exhibition of paintings and drawings from Sweden’s Nationalmuseum, the Morgan Library & Museum announced.

While it is closed for renovation the Nationalmuseum, in Stockholm, is lending 76 works – 14 paintings and 62 drawings — to the Morgan for a show scheduled to run Feb. 5-May 14, 2017.

Four iconic paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and other Old Masters will remain at Madrid's Prado Museum after a protracted battle with a new national museum.

The Prado took in Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights (1500–1505) for safekeeping in 1936, at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War at the request of the royal collection, which owns the work.

The Lock, one of John Constable’s most famous compositions sold for £9,109,000 / €12,562,266 / $13,699,025 at Sotheby’s London, 160 years after its last appearance on the market. The monumental landscape depicting the countryside of the painter’s “careless boyhood” was the highlight of the Old Master & British Paintings Evening sale which featured a significant number of museum-quality works and totalled £22.6 million / €31.2 million / $34 Million (est. £21.8-32.6 million).

The British artist Anish Kapoor unveiled a gory triptych of reliefs in the Rijksmuseum’s Gallery of Honour today (27 November), the Amsterdam museum’s most ceremonial space. Internal Object in Three Parts, which are large-scale works made of silicone, earth and pigment, refer to themes of “violence, trauma and social and political unrest,” according to the Dutch national museum’s press statement.

Next week, The Lock, one of John Constable’s most famous compositions will reappear on the market for the first time in 160 years. The monumental landscape - depicting the countryside of the painter’s “careless boyhood” - will lead Sotheby’s London Evening auction of Old Master & British Paintings on 9th December. The sale will be further distinguished by museum-quality works, an unusually large number of which are from private collections and come to the market for the first time in several generations.

Paris Tableau—the Old Master fair that closed two days early this year after the terrorist attacks in the capital on 13 November—will become part of the Biennale des Antiquaires, which will be held annually at the Grand Palais.

The 28th edition of the Biennale—the historic jewelry, art and antiques fair—is scheduled to open next autumn (10-18 September 2016) with Henri Loyrette, the former president of the Louvre, at the helm.
