Donald Judd may be primarily known for his minimalist sculptures, but a new temporary exhibition at the artist's former private residence in Soho, New York, will shine the spotlight on prints, an under-known facet of his work.

For four decades, Judd thoroughly explored the printmaking process, creating works using aquatint, etching, and screenprinting, with a special focus on woodcuts. The exhibition is curated by the artist's son, Flavin, the co-president of the Judd Foundation.

The IFPDA Print Fair Releases Its 2015 Exhibitor List

International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) has announced the exhibitors for its annual Prints Fair that runs from November 4 to 8, at the Park Avenue Armory. Launched in 1991, the fair will present 89 exhibitors this year, selected from the foundation’s members of international art dealers. “The Fair tracks 500 years of printmaking,” said IFPDA executive director Michele Senecal, “and given that it draws the top collectors and curators, exhibitors must be diligent in their efforts to secure the best offerings to present, whether they be Old Master, Modern, or Contemporary.”

He is one of the great draftsmen of the impressionist era, acclaimed for strongly structured compositions and a masterful use of line. But when Edgar Degas discovered the printmaking technique known as monotype, everything changed.

As a major exhibition due to open at the Museum of Modern Art next spring reveals, he became much looser and more improvisational in his working methods. He regularly mixed printmaking with other media, like pastel. And he expanded past the subjects for which he is best known—dancers and scenes of modern life—to include risqué brothel scenes and landscapes verging on abstraction.

Louis XIV’s imperialist ambitions manifested themselves in every activity under his dominion, which included the production of etchings and engravings. Fully appreciating the beauty and utility of prints, he and his advisors transformed Paris into the single most important printmaking center in Europe, a position the city maintained until the 20th century. Fueled by official policies intended to elevate the arts and glorify the Sun King, printmakers and print publishers produced hundreds of thousands of works on paper to meet a demand for images that was as insatiable then as it is now.

Japanese prints were last shown as a group at the MFA during the 40th anniversary year in 2005, and the majority of the more than 40 works in this new exhibition are on view for the first time. One of the world’s great artistic traditions, Japanese prints are known for their technical accomplishment, superlative design, and sheer beauty.

"Images of the Floating World and Beyond: Japanese Woodblock Prints" extends from the late eighteenth century to an example from the twenty-first. The exhibition opens Saturday, May 9, and continues through Sunday, August 16. Director Emeritus Dr. John E. Schloder has curated the show with Stephanie Chill, M.A. He will introduce the works in a lecture on opening day at 3 p.m.

"Rembrandt: A Decade of Brilliance (1648-1658)" now at the Hoehn Family Galleries at the University of San Diego, teams a core group of outstanding etchings owned by local resident Robert Hoehn—one of the world’s foremost private collectors of Rembrandt prints—with distinguished examples from public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe. The show focuses on the years of Rembrandt’s most intense experimentation with etching, when the Dutch master harnessed the medium’s demanding technical processes to his artistic vision, particularly in his biblical narratives, creating some of the most ambitious and fully realized works in the history of printmaking. The show allows us to compare multiple versions of significant images side-by-side to tease out the specific procedures Rembrandt employed to achieve the resplendent effects of his greatest graphic masterpieces.

The Van Gogh Museum Acquires a Rare Degas Print

The Van Gogh Museum has for the first time acquired a work by Edgar Degas: the "La lecture après le bain" monotype. A monotype is a print of an ink drawing made on a plate. Degas’ monotypes are rare and they were a hidden treasure, because they never left his studio during his lifetime. "La lecture après le bain" is the first black monotype in any Dutch public art collection. The Mondriaan Fund and the Rembrandt Association have made this acquisition possible.

On March 25th "Landscapes of the Mind. British Landscape Painting. Tate Collection, 1690-2007" was presented for the first time ever in Mexico City, an exhibition organized by Tate in association with Museo Nacional de Arte, as part of the celebrations of the Dual Year between Mexico and the United Kingdom.

This exhibition presents 111 artworks by British and European artists, with a plurality of techniques (painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture/installation, etc.) which ponder on the evolution of British landscape in art history. The term "Britain" is understood as the geographical entity of the British Isles, i.e., the archipelago that includes England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, before the independence of the latter in 1921.

The Norton Museum of Art presents "Master Prints: Dürer to Matisse," featuring astonishing works on paper including woodcuts, etchings, engravings, aquatints, and lithographs that range from the 15th to 20th centuries. This not-to-be-missed exhibition brings together several of the earliest as well as later examples of the golden age of printmaking. Works by old masters Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, and Canaletto, will be displayed alongside those of modern masters Degas, Matisse, Picasso, and Cezanne. The exhibition is on view through Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, and is accompanied by a video demonstrating printmaking processes, and texts describing the role prints held in society before the advent of photography.

“Each and every work in this exhibition is rare, and of a breathtaking quality that is no longer available on the market,” says Jerry Dobrick, the Norton’s Curatorial Associate for European Art.

The Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Washington, is currently hosting the exhibition “Under Pressure: Contemporary Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation.” The show, which features works by artists such as Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Barbara Kruger, Sol Lewitt, and Andy Warhol, traces printmaking’s rise to prominence in post-war American art. Drawn from real estate mogul Jordan D. Schnitzer’s vast collection, “Under Pressure” includes examples from major movements within contemporary art such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Photorealism, and Minimalism.

During the late 1950s, the art world experienced a groundswell of interest in printmaking. Ignoring the stigma associated with the process, pioneering artists such as Rauschenberg and Johns began experimenting with a variety of techniques, including offset lithography, screen printing, wood-cutting, lino-cutting, and laser-cutting.
