The Lock, one of John Constable’s most famous compositions sold for £9,109,000 / €12,562,266 / $13,699,025 at Sotheby’s London, 160 years after its last appearance on the market. The monumental landscape depicting the countryside of the painter’s “careless boyhood” was the highlight of the Old Master & British Paintings Evening sale which featured a significant number of museum-quality works and totalled £22.6 million / €31.2 million / $34 Million (est. £21.8-32.6 million).

Next week, The Lock, one of John Constable’s most famous compositions will reappear on the market for the first time in 160 years. The monumental landscape - depicting the countryside of the painter’s “careless boyhood” - will lead Sotheby’s London Evening auction of Old Master & British Paintings on 9th December. The sale will be further distinguished by museum-quality works, an unusually large number of which are from private collections and come to the market for the first time in several generations.

In an effort to maintain the financial future of Russborough, a historic Georgian house in Ireland, a selection of Old Master paintings from The Alfred Beit Foundation will be on offer at the Christie’s London Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale on July 9.

Nearly 300 years old, the heritage home requires constant restoration and upkeep entrusted to the Beit family, notable patrons of the arts. The proceeds of the sale will go to an endowment fund managed by the Beit’s that will ensure the future of Russborough.

On March 25th "Landscapes of the Mind. British Landscape Painting. Tate Collection, 1690-2007" was presented for the first time ever in Mexico City, an exhibition organized by Tate in association with Museo Nacional de Arte, as part of the celebrations of the Dual Year between Mexico and the United Kingdom.

This exhibition presents 111 artworks by British and European artists, with a plurality of techniques (painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture/installation, etc.) which ponder on the evolution of British landscape in art history. The term "Britain" is understood as the geographical entity of the British Isles, i.e., the archipelago that includes England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, before the independence of the latter in 1921.

Sotheby’s has set a new record for J.M.W. Turner during its December 3 Old Masters and British Paintings Evening sale in London, selling the artist’s “Rome, from Mount Aventine” for £30.3 million ($47.4 million) against an estimate of £15-20 million. The previous record for the artist of £29.7 million ($45.1 million) was set by Sotheby’s in 2010 with the painting “Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino.”

Turner’s “Rome, from Mount Aventine,” which Sotheby’s describes as “one of the greatest masterpieces of British art left in private hands,” was last seen on the market in 1878 and has been in the same collection for the past 136 years, according to Sotheby’s.

Christie’s auction on Tuesday 2nd December 2014 will be 'Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale', in London; will feature a remarkable portrait by Sir Anthony van Dyck of the musician Hendrick Liberti. The work was in the collection of King Charles I at Whitehall by 1639; the piece has not been seen for almost a century, since its sale at Christie’s by the 8th Duke of Grafton in 1923.

The auction at Christie's will present a selection of 36 high quality works that have been curated with the aim of being new to the market and attractively priced.

Christie’s evening auction of Old Master & British Paintings realised £44,986,000/ $77,016,032/ €56,547,402. The sale attracted 145 registered bidders from 27 countries across 5 continents. The top price was paid for Venice, the Bacino di San Marco with the Piazzetta and the Doge's Palace by Francesco Guardi From The Baron Henri de Rothschild Collection, a masterpiece dating from the artist’s full maturity which realised £9,882,500/ $16,918,840/ €12,422,303, setting the second highest price for a work by the artist at auction (estimate: £8-10 million). New artist record prices at auction were achieved for works by Willem Claesz. Heda (lot 31); Matthias Stomer (lot 34); The Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds (lot 36); Luca Giordano (lot 38); and Sir Henry Raeburn (lot 64), among others.

Notable prices were also achieved for the masterpiece by Francesco Guardi from The Baron Henri de Rothschild Collection (lot 19: £9,882,500) and the Brueghel the Younger "Road to Calvary‟ (lot 13: £5,514,500), each respectively setting the second highest auction price for the artist.”

A painting revealed to be a Van Dyck portrait on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow is expected to sell for about £500,000 when it is auctioned later this year.

The work was bought by Father Jamie MacLeod from an antiques shop in Cheshire 12 years ago for just £400.

The painting was identified after show presenter Fiona Bruce saw it and thought it might be genuine.

Over the course of 30 years, Barbara Piasecka Johnson (1937-2013) – art connoisseur, philanthropist and wife of the late John Seward Johnson, co-founder of the Johnson and Johnson medical and pharmaceutical firm - assembled one of the most remarkable collections of Old Master paintings, drawings and works of art in recent times. On 9 July 2014, Sotheby’s London Evening sale of Old Master and British Paintings will present a group of nine Renaissance and Baroque masterworks from her Estate, led by three remarkably rare Florentine drawings, including the only Botticelli drawing to appear on the market in a century (est. £1-1.5 million).

The proceeds of the sale, expected to fetch over £8.6 million, are to benefit the Barbara Piasecka Johnson Foundation, the primary focus of which is helping children with autism.

British businessman and art collector James Stunt has loaned Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) five portraits by European masters Anthony van Dyck, Peter Lely, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Lawrence, and John Constable. Van Dyck’s  portrait of Francois Langlois, a French art dealer, publisher, and amateur musician, as an itinerant performer is on view in the museum’s Leo and Phyllis Beranek Gallery. Lely’s portrait of the notorious entertainer and socialite Moll Davis is on view in the MFA’s Hamilton Palace Room. The works by Reynolds, Lawrence, and Constable will be installed next week.  

Stunt, who has homes in Los Angeles and London, is an avid collector of British portraiture. He recently offered to buy van Dyck’s last self portrait, which he planned to loan to the MFA, but an outpouring of public support to keep the painting in England caused Stunt to withdraw his offer. there is currently an ongoing public fundraising appeal to purchase the painting so that it will remain on view in the U.K.
