Unique ceramics by Pablo Picasso belonging to the artist’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s this summer. Recent additions of artwork representing medieval Europe, the Ancient Americas, 20th-century photography, and contemporary art further enhance the Cleveland Museum of Art’s permanent collection. World-renowned for its quality and breadth, the collection represents almost 45,000 objects and 6,000 years of achievement in the arts.

The latest acquisitions include a Virgin and Child, a rare 13th-century wooden sculpture from the Mosan region of Europe; a Standing Female Figure, a clay figure representative of the Classic Veracruz period on Mexico’s Gulf Coast; and Just the two of us, one of contemporary artist Julia Wachtel’s first paintings to employ cartoons. The museum also announced the addition of eight photographs by Ansel Adams, a gift from Frances P. Taft, a longtime museum supporter and trustee.

For its 2014-2015 season, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has asked artists Nicole Cherubini, Mario Garcia Torres, Iman Issa, Shana Lutker, and Gary Simmons to create site-specific projects in the museum. In creating the commissioned works, the artists have been asked to respond to both the museum’s architecture and Miami. Projects range from Cherubini’s clay works to a large mural by Simmons to a historiographic installation from Torres.

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) takes a closer look at the medium of clay throughout seven exhibitions that are all part of Marvelous Mud: Clay Through the Ages. Celebrating the prolific and diverse material, Marvelous Mud reveals how clay has shaped culture, creativity, science and industry over time and around the globe. The museum-wide exhibition explores one major medium and illustrates its diversity and history through fascinating stories that span time and geographic location.

“For centuries, clay has been an important medium for artists. It has been used to make unglazed earthenware vessels, exquisite porcelains, and flamboyant contemporary sculpture,” said Margaret Young-Sánchez, chief curator and the Frederick and Jan Mayer Curator of Pre-Colombian Art at the DAM. “We asked our curators to dive into their collections and create inventive exhibitions around this rich material while also taking advantage of loans from around the world.”
