The J. Paul Getty Trust awarded the Third Annual J. Paul Getty Medal to Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry at a gathering of arts and community leaders at the Getty Center in Brentwood on Monday evening, September 28. Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel introduced Gehry, who was honored for transforming the built landscape with buildings such as Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Showing replicas of artworks instead of the real thing is usually anathema to an art museum, but the J. Paul Getty Trust on Tuesday showed why that rule has its exceptions.

The Getty Trust fleshed out details of its 2016 exhibition “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road,” which will include complete, exact, walk-in replicas of three decorated caves that artists adorned with Buddhist-themed murals over 1,000 years starting in the 4th century.

The J. Paul Getty Trust is plugging a fresh executive into what's perhaps the art world's most counterintuitive job: getting rich folks, corporations and charitable foundations to make big cash donations to an organization that already sits on a pile of investments more than $6 billion high.

The Getty announced this week that Janet Feldstein McKillop, head fundraiser for St. Matthew's Parish School, a K-8 Episcopalian parochial school in Pacific Palisades, will step into a job whose only previous occupant did not gain a lot of discernible traction.

The Detroit Institute of Arts has been pledged a  total of $13 million by New York-based The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Los Angeles-based J. Paul Getty Trust. The pledge will be put toward the DIA’s commitment to raise $100 million as part of a “Grand Bargain” that will help the city of Detroit emerge from bankruptcy, support city pensioners and protect the museum’s art collection for the public.

The $13 million consists of up to $10 million from the Mellon Foundation and $3 million from the J. Paul Getty Trust. Mellon has pledged $5 million immediately, with the full amount contingent on the museum raising sufficient matching funds to meet its $100 million fundraising requirement.
