Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz has returned to her most personal 1999 project, “Women,” a series of UBS-commissioned portriats to engage new subjects in the next generation. Seventeen years later, with “Women: New Portraits,” Leibovitz is adding to history and elaborating with a new mentor, Gloria Steinem, and a new format beyond the printed page. Leibovitz and Steinem have engaged new viewers through a 10-city international tour, and have focused on issues ranging from sexual violence against women to women’s experiences in the working world in “talking circles,” where the audience is invited to join in. Leibovitz felt her 1999 project had deep resonance, but that it was never “done.” This exhibition will first open in Frankfurt from October 14 to November 6, and then in New York from November 18 to December 11 in the gymnasium of the old Bayview Correctional Facility, a former women’s prison.

On the final leg of its Smithsonian-organized, cross-country tour, Annie Leibovitz’s “Pilgrimage” exhibition will land at the New-York Historical Society from November 21 through February 22, 2015. While Leibovitz may be best known as a portraitist to the stars, this collection of images contains nary a celebrity portrait — at least not in the traditional sense.

When Leibovitz’s longtime partner Susan Sontag died in 2004, she took to the road to visit places and things that the couple had always wanted to see together.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Wexner Center for the Arts, the multidisciplinary contemporary arts institution will hold its most impressive exhibition in “Transfigurations: Modern Masters from the Wexner Family Collection,” which opens to the public on Sept. 20. That this is the Wexner Center’s most significant exhibition is saying a lot, considering past ones have included icons like Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz.

When modern masters like Alberto Giacometti, Jean Dubuffet and Pablo Picasso are involved — all from the personal collection of Leslie and Abigail Wexner — it signals a watershed moment.

In her 21 years leading the Wexner Center for the Arts, Sherri Geldin has stretched the contemporary art center’s reach beyond the Ohio State University campus on which it’s located. Geldin has elevated the institution’s national profile and positioned it as the center of contemporary culture in Ohio’s capital city.

Geldin’s successful staging of the first-ever exhibition of portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz’s Master Set in 2013 exemplified both her influence and aspirations as director of the Wexner Center.
