Iwan Wirth, President and co-founder of the internationally acclaimed modern and contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth, announced that the company will build a permanent home in New York City’s west Chelsea arts district. One of the most sought-after locations in New York, Chelsea is brimming with top-notch galleries, including David Zwirner Gallery, Paul Kasmin Gallery, Andrea Rosen Gallery, Marianne Boesky Gallery, and Lehmann Maupin. This new venue will replace Hauser & Wirth’s current temporary downtown gallery, which will continue to host exhibitions and various programs until its lease expires in 2017. The 7,400-square-foot, multi-level space will complement Hauser & Wirth’s townhouse on East 69th Street.

The new Hauser & Wirth  gallery will be designed by Annabelle Selldorf of Selldorf Architects, who has worked with the gallery since the 1990s on its various locations in Zurich, London, and New York.

Lehmann Maupin's Chelsea gallery is relocating, taking over 536 West 22nd Street, currently home to the illustrious Sonnabend Gallery, which will close its exhibition space at year's end. Though Sonnabend owns the space, it will be leasing it to Lehmann Maupin and will no longer have an exhibition space of its own, though its operations will otherwise continue, associate director Queenie Wong told artnet News in a phone interview.

After nearly 30 years in SoHo (Ileana Sonnabend opened her eponymous gallery there in 1971 after nine years of business in Paris), the gallery moved into its current space in May of 2000.

Frieze Week, a seven-day concentration of art events, is currently underway in London. Between auctions, selling exhibitions, and a swath of fairs, approximately $2.2 billion worth of art will be up for grabs.

The epicenter of the event, the Frieze Art Fair, will open to VIP guests on Tuesday, October 14. Now in its twelfth year, the fair will present contemporary offerings from 162 international dealers, including Gagosian Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Casey Kaplan, Lehmann Maupin, Pace Gallery, Galerie Perrotin, Sprüth Magers, White Cube, and David Zwirner. Located in a bespoke structure in Regent’s Park, the Frieze Art Fair features a number of unique sections.

By the time Art Basel Hong Kong opened to VIPs on May 14, Edouard Malingue had already sold out his entire inventory of paintings. He spent the rest of the fair fending off disappointed would-be buyers.

“Some of my clients got really upset with my staff and I had to intervene,” said Hong-Kong-based Malingue, after all seven works by Chinese painter Yuan Yuan were sold in advance of the fair. “I explained that we’ve been selling to new collectors and the artist isn’t a factory.”

When demolition begins on 540-544 West 26th Street in New York, three prominent contemporary art galleries -- Tony Shafrazi Gallery, Lehmann Maupin, and Stephen Haller Gallery -- will say goodbye to their current spaces. Located in Manhattan’s booming Chelsea neighborhood, the two-story property, which includes a neighboring parking lot, will be transformed into a 130,000-square-foot commercial and office space with community facilities. The site will be co-developed by commercial real estate broker, The Manhattes Group LLC, and Savanna, a real estate private equity firm and asset management company.

Stephen Haller Gallery, which has been in Chelsea for over a decade, plans to open a new location in the neighborhood. Lehmann Maupin and Tony Shafrazi Gallery have yet to announce their plans for the future. Lehmann Maupin has a second gallery on Chrystie Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

The Manhattes Group and Savanna have not released a start date for the project.

Frieze London, the most highly anticipated contemporary art event of the year, opened on October 17 in a custom-built structure in Regent’s Park. This year’s show features 152 preeminent galleries from around the world offering works by well-known artists as well as promising newcomers.

The art world’s elite flock to Frieze to browse works being offered by established dealers including Gagosian Gallery, Lehmann Maupin, Lisson Gallery, Pace, White Cube and David Zwirner. This year’s offerings include five works by American pop artist Jeff Koons (Gagosian Gallery), sculptures by Swiss artist Urs Fischer (Sadie Coles HQ) and a monumental white odalisque sculpture by New York-based artist Jennifer Rubell (Stephen Friedman Gallery).  

Now in its second year, Frieze Masters, which presents works created before the year 2000, ranging from ancient era and old masters to late 20^th century works, is taking place at the same time as its contemporary counterpart. Exhibitors include Acquavella Galleries, Hauser & Wirth and Landau Fine Art.

During Frieze’s preview on October 16, the Tate Collection acquired five works by emerging and leading international artists thanks to a £150,000 gift from The Outset/Frieze Art Fair Fund.

Frieze London and Frieze Masters will take place through October 20.
