The 28th iteration of the Los Angeles Modernism Show & Sale will kick off on Friday, April 24, 2015, presenting guests with a top-notch selection of furniture, fine art, and decorative objects representing all design movements of the 20th century, including early Art Deco pieces, American studio furniture, and mid century modern design. The recently published Louis I. Kahn in Conversation: Interviews with John W. Cook and Heinrich Klotz, 1969–70 provides fresh insights into the philosophy and genius of one of America’s greatest twentieth-century architects. Transcribed from audio recordings of candid conversations that have never before been published in their entirety, these interviews with Kahn (1901–1974) were conducted by Heinrich Klotz, a young German architectural historian who was then a visiting professor at Yale University, and John W. Cook, who was teaching architecture at Yale Divinity School. The volume has been edited by Jules David Prown, Paul Mellon Professor Emeritus of the History of Art at Yale University and Senior Research Fellow at the Yale Center for British Art, and Karen E. Denavit, Information Analyst at the Center.

The New-York Historical Society is to unveil Pablo Picasso's iconic painted theater curtain, commissioned for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Le Tricorne, in 1919. The masterpiece is the largest work by the Spanish born artist in America. It was donated by the Landmarks Conservancy to the New-York Historical Society and after considerable conservation will be on view to the public, later this spring. The Le Tricorne curtain was installed as a tapestry for 55 years at the Four Seasons Restaurant in the Mies van der Rohe designed, modernist, Seagram Building, in New York City.

The Katonah Museum of Art celebrates the silver anniversary of its landmark building by Edward Larrabee Barnes (April 22, 1915 – September 22, 2004) with an exhibition exploring the work of this legendary architect in Westchester, where Barnes resided. Though internationally renowned for ambitious modernist museum structures, The Katonah Museum project was unique in design— an intimate, light-filled space surrounded by the natural beauty of this idyllic hamlet located just 45 minutes from New York City. Unlike many large projects Barnes had undertaken, this one was as much a form of personal expression as architectural design, with the informal feel of a domestic space for art.

The story of Barnes’ relationship to the Katonah Museum of Art crosses the worlds of business, art, and family life.

The Whitney Prepares for Its May 1 Reopening

When the Whitney Museum of American Art opens its new building in Manhattan’s meatpacking district on May 1, it’s the big things everyone will notice first: the sweeping views west to the Hudson River; the romantic silhouettes of Manhattan’s wooden water towers; the four outdoor terraces for presenting sculptures, performances and movie screenings; and the tiered profile of its steel-paneled facade, intentionally reminiscent of the Whitney’s Modernist, granite-clad Marcel Breuer building on Madison Avenue, which had been the museum’s home since 1966.

Its new digs, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, also offer commodious interior spaces: 50,000 square feet of galleries, unencumbered by structural columns, and huge elevators that are themselves immersive environments, the work of the artist Richard Artschwager.

Carved from magnificent pieces of rich, often rare, wood, his works are spare and elegant -- the result of a formal education in architecture as well as extensive exposure to European Modernism, Eastern religious philosophy, and Japanese craft traditions.

Nakashima’s profound reverence for wood dates back to his childhood in Spokane, Washington. It was there, amongst the towering forests of the Olympic Peninsula, that he developed an abiding admiration for the inherent beauty of wood.

A New Bauhaus Museum will Open in 2019

The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has announced plans to build a major museum honoring the Bauhaus School in Dessau, Germany. Founded by the modernist architect Walter Gropius in 1919, the Bauhaus stands as one of most influential design schools in modern history.

Gropius established the Bauhaus School in the city of Weimar, Germany, with a singular mission -- to “reimagine the material world to reflect the unity of all the arts.” In Gropius’ manifesto, Proclamation of the Bauhaus, he explains his vision for reversing the split between art and production by returning to the crafts as the foundation of all artistic activity and design. Gropius established the Bauhaus School and developed a craft-based curriculum to educate and train artisans and designers, giving them the tools needed to create functional and beautiful objects for the rapidly-modernizing world.

The seventeenth iteration of The Armory Show opened to the public on Thursday, March 5, 2015. Housed in Piers 92 and 94 along the Hudson River on Manhattan’s West Side, The Armory Show, which has spawned an array of satellite fairs and related happenings, is the largest art fair in New York and one of the industry’s leading international art events.

Founded in 1994 by dealers Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks, and Paul Morris as the Gramercy International Art Fair (named after its initial location in the legendary Gramercy Park Hotel), the fair acquired its new title in 1999 after relocating to the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue. The name was an homage to the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art, which is often referred to as The Armory Show. One of the most influential art events to take place during the 20th century, the 1913 Armory Show introduced the American public to experimental European art movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, and Futurism.

The Ryerson Image Center is the recipient of an archive of nearly 13,000 photographs and negatives by the acclaimed 20th century photographer Berenice Abbott.

The archive, a donation from a group of anonymous donors, represents the largest and most comprehensive collection of Abbott’s work in the world.

Abbott, who died in 1991, was best known for her project "Changing New York," in which she doggedly documented the transition of New York City during the Great Depression and the years leading up to the war. Her project, financed by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Federal Art Project, has become perhaps the definitive document of the city’s transition to modernity.

The ADAA Art Show Opens at the Park Avenue Armory

The Art Dealers Association of America’s (ADAA) 27th annual Art Show opened to the public on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. The ADAA Art Show’s kick-off marks the beginning of New York City's Armory Week -- a highly-anticipated, multifaceted art event that includes a dizzying array of fairs, gallery exhibitions, and related happenings.

Held at the historic Park Avenue Armory, this year’s ADAA Art Show features thoughtfully curated solo, two-person, and thematic exhibitions organized by 72 of the country’s leading art dealers. Featuring both modern masters and cutting-edge contemporary works in all media, the show allows exhibitors to emphasize their gallery’s vision through these finely curated exhibitions. Highlights include Thomas Colville Fine Art’s (Guilford, Connecticut) presentation of works by James Abbott McNeill Whistler and other artists who were influenced by the late nineteenth-century painter, and Hirschl & Adler Galleries’ (New York, New York) exploration of Jazz Age Modernism, which includes works by Winold Reiss, Romare Bearden, Stuart Davis, and others.
