Michael Govan, Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and architect Peter Zumthor revealed a model of the institution’s new wing during the first day of the Venice Architecture Biennale. Zumthor, who will helm the renovation, has been working on the expansion plan for a number years. Construction on the new wing is expected to reach completion in 2023.

Rick Friedman, founder of the art fair empire Hamptons Expo Group, has launched a new luxury living design fair. The inaugural Hamptons Contemporary Design + Decor Fair will take place in a magnificent, 40,000-square-foot pavilion at the Southampton Elks Fairgrounds. Friedman, who sold the Hamptons Expo Group—the producer a number of influential fairs, including ArtHamptons—back in 2015, says, “After I sold the fine art fairs, I took inspiration from the landscape and luxury synonymous with Hamptons living to create a new experience.”

A new book by the journalist Arthur Lubow will explore the life and work of the seminal photographer Diane Arbus. Known for her unflinching images of people on the outskirts of society, Arbus is widely considered one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. Diane Arbus: Portrait of a Photographer will be released on June 7—approximately a month before a highly-anticipated retrospective of Arbus’ work opens at the Met Breuer in New York.

The Rijksmuseum—the most visited museum in the Netherlands—has named Taco Dibbits as its new Director. Dibbits, who has served as the institution’s Director of Collections since 2008, will replace Wim Pijbes. In addition to facilitating a number of notable acquisitions, Dibbits played a pivotal role in the Rijksmuseum’s ten-year renovation, which drew to a close in 2013.

Spanish authorities have arrested seven individuals in connection to the theft of five paintings by Francis Bacon. The works, estimated to be worth around $27.8 million, were stolen from a home in Madrid earlier this year. The paintings, which belonged to a close friend of the late artist, have not yet been recovered.

The New Orleans Museum of Art is the latest institution to add works from its collection to the Google Cultural Institute—an online platform that allows visitors to browse masterpieces from an array of international museums. So far, the New Orleans Museum of Art has added seventy-one works to its digital collection, including works by Jackson Pollock, Edgar Degas, Stuart Davis, Robert Henri, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, and Frederick Carl Frieseke.

Kimberli Meyer will step down from her post as Director of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture after fourteen years with the institution. The West Hollywood-based center for art and architecture is headquartered in architect Rudolph M. Schindler’s House and Studio. Meyer will assume a new role as director of the University Art Museum at Cal State Long Beach.

The Pérez Art Museum’s collection is growing thanks to a number of recent purchases and donations. In addition to over 100 contemporary works that were donated by local developer Craig Robins, the Miami institution has acquired a large-scale sculpture by Pablo Atchugarry and works by Romare Bearden, Mark Bradford, Theaster Gates, and Tauba Auerbach.

Florence’s Uffizi Gallery is partnering with Indiana University to digitize its collection of ancient sculptures. The goal is to have the museum’s collection of Greek and Roman statuary available online by 2020. Indiana University has enlisted students in its new phD program in virtual heritage to photograph roughly 1,250 pieces from the Uffizi’s holdings.

Christie’s will bolster its presence in China via a new exhibition space in Beijing. The auction house has had an outpost in the city for many years, but the new venue, which is expected to open this fall, will provide permanent viewing and exhibition spaces. While details have not yet been confirmed, The Art Newspaper reports that highlights from Christie’s November sales in New York will go on view in the new space ahead of the auctions.

Beginning on June 21, Los Angeles residents will have a rare chance to enjoy a stunning collection of Outsider Art. The Bronx Museum of Art has launched a $25 million renovation campaign. The project will involve expanding the institution’s existing building to accommodate its growing number of visitors. The renovation will be helmed by Monica Ponce de Leon, Dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University. The museum was last expanded in 2006, six years before it implemented a free admission policy.

Lucinda Barnes, who has served as Chief Curator at the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive since 2014, will retire on June 29. Barnes played a pivotal role in the institution's move to its new Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed building, which opened to the public back in January. In addition to the Berkeley Art Museum, Barnes has worked at a number of venerable institutions over the course of her forty-three-year career, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The Danforth Art Museum and Studio School has been told that it will have to vacate its Framingham, Massachusetts, building as soon as September 1 after the structure’s boiler failed to pass state inspection. The Danforth, which has occupied the building since 1975, is currently looking for rental properties to serve as a temporary home.

A six-foot sketch by the English Romantic painter John Constable will lead Christie's 250th Anniversary sale on June 30 in London. The study for a painting in Constable’s Stour Valley series (the finished work hangs in the Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens in California) is expected to fetch around $18 million-$23 million. The oil on canvas has been in a private collection for the past twenty years.

A new Francis Bacon catalogue raisonné by scholar Martin Harrison will be published on June 30. Featuring 584 paintings, many of which reside in private collections, the five-volume tome will provide an unprecedented look at the evolution of Bacon’s work as well as his tumultuous life. The catalogue raisonné includes portraits of Mick Jagger and Robert and Lisa Sainsbury, who were among Bacon’s early patrons.

Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has indicted former Morgan Stanley executive and well known energy investor, Morris Zukerman, for failing to pay over $4.5 million in taxes on a number of Old Master paintings. Zukerman is also accused of tax evasion in connection to the $130 million sale of an oil company he owned.

The Courtauld Institute of Art in London has received a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund—an organization that uses money raised by the country’s National Lottery players to help protect and preserve heritage sites. The $13 million boost will help the Courtauld launch “Courtauld Connects,” a major renovation project that will involve revitalizing its existing structure and adding a new exhibition space. The undertaking is expected to cost around $73 million to complete.
